♦Put
your individual and/or boxed holiday ornaments and decorations into a few medium to
large size
clear plastic containers. The ones with hinged flip top lids that close in the center
are convenient to use. They are for sale at most major
discount retailers and home improvement super centers and sometimes office
supply stores.
Flip top lids are sometimes called "wing lids" or "wing top" lids or
the containers may be called wing top containers. Wing top containers are
a bit more expensive than ordinary pull on/off tops.

♦These containers with the flip top lids are stackable so it's effective to stack
them three or four high in your garage, attic or the back of a closet. Perhaps
put each stack on a frame or small dolly with wheels so you can move them easily
as needed to reach other items in your garage.

♦Use
containers with different color lids to designate different holiday storage
inside.
♦Or
buy different color ornament storage boxes for different holidays.
Either way you'll know at a glance which bin contains
Christmas decorations (e.g. red or green tops) and which bin contains Halloween
decorations (e.g. orange, black or purple tops).
♦Place
visible labels on the front and side of the storage boxes that state the holiday
and a general (or more specific) list of the contents. You'll want to do this
even if you're using color-coded tops on your bins. A visible label is a large
one such as a full-size sheet of paper, with large marker writing, taped onto
the holiday storage bin with a piece of translucent shipping tape.
♦Keep all type holiday storage ornament boxes together but
clustered by particular holiday. Then rotate the bins per holiday so the one you
don't need for 11 more months is now in the back.
♦Or stack the boxes on a
sturdy shelving system that allows you to access each box
separately without having to move any other box. Mount it to the wall for stability. And whether you put
it in a closet or the garage, you can easily retrieve a box without digging
through stacks of boxes. It can hold cardboard boxes or plastic bins and usually a lot
of weight (but you want to balance the weight out on the shelves).
♦You'll find
more holiday storage containers such as for ornaments,
wreaths and gift wrap at Organize-Everything. Pictured to the right is the
Ornament Storage - Snap N' Stack Ornament Storage Box by Snapware
which
is 14 inches square but has three levels of storage that snap onto each other.
This is a very compact box and easy to tote.
Taylor Gifts also sells an
Christmas Ornament Storage Box
with
snap together trays.
Buy several ornament storage boxes if
you have different ornament collections. Put each type of ornament in its own
ornament storage box.
Don't worry about having a few spots
not yet filled. This is actually a good thing. You're leaving room for expansion
of your collection in the ornament storage box.
