Spice Storage and Organization
Options
♦Don't search high and low, literally, for the right spice
when you're in the midst of cooking. If you have a small kitchen closet shelf
available, put a three-tiered "expand-a-shelf" in this closet to hold spices.
♦Walter Drake sells several sizes of the "expand-a-shelf".
(And so do a lot of other stores online or walk-in.) Because the expand-a-shelf is built like a staircase or
stadium seating, you can see all of your spices at once. The expand-a-shelf that
I use fits about 15 spice jars and spice containers of average size; my expand-a-shelf
fits nicely inside a narrow cabinet that would be a lot less useful or
functional without this three-tiered shelf.
♦Another option for storing and displaying spices is a "Lazy Susan", which spins with the flick
of a finger; this would work well in a kitchen cabinet with poor space layout
and visibility or in a corner closet. Or put this carousel in what's
usually a hard-to-reach corner on the kitchen counter. This is a two-tier
white turntable spotted at online retailer Lilian Vernon:

♦Some people like to put their spices in a line on the back of
the stovetop (though some experts warn the heat can be detrimental to some
spices' potency). But if you do this anyway, put your spices in alphabetical
order.
♦Another kitchen spice storage option is to keep your spices in a portable pull out wire tray
or basket that
has one- to two-inch sides.
♦Or use space on the inside of your kitchen cabinet
doors as a kitchen spice storage idea. You'll find products called spice jar
clips (and similar names) made just for this
purpose at stores that sell kitchen organizing products.
