Hardware Storage Ideas--Storing Nuts, Bolts, Hooks and More

By Karen Porter, Editor

You probably have more than one handful of hardware, such as nuts, bolts and nails, stored around your home. Get them together. But instead of shoving your miscellaneous hardware all into a big old empty coffee can or mayo jar, try sorting them like this. The next time you need a nail or screw, it'll be organized and on-hand to make your job easier. Stackable storage bins are perfect for holding and organizing those hardware items that are slightly bigger than nails and screws.)

If you're alive you have extra pieces of hardware around your home. And the older you get, the more you accumulate. You assemble something and find yourself with leftover parts. You buy hardware to hang curtain rods and you have some extra hardware. You use push-in hooks or screw-in hooks to hang something in your home. You take it down. You stash the hardware. You buy the wrong hardware for the job. And then you buy some more. You trash something--but you keep some of its hardware in case you need it for other repairs. See how easy it is to end up with extra screws, nuts, bolts, hooks, nails and more in your home. Soon you have a coffee can full of hardware. Make it easier on yourself to find the right hardware for the job you're doing by separating and organizing these items now.

One of the best sorters for the job is simply the ordinary see-through plastic compartmentalized box. You don't have to label anything because you can see everything right through the box. And you can carry these compartment boxes with you to the job so you don't have to walk back and forth to get another tack or hook if the first one doesn't work for the job. Stacks and Stacks sells the Hardware Compartment Box with 6, 12, 18 and 24 compartments. These particular ones have sliding lids too. Buy as many as you need and keep them in a stack on a shelf in your garage near your tools.

Got more or bigger hardware. Add a Utility Chest with drawers or utility cabinet to your mix of hardware organizers. These set on a shelf. The one pictured here has 44 drawers.

Stacks and Stacks sells a Tip Out Utility Cabinet too which offers better visibility of the contents. A word of warning though...put it in the middle of a secure shelf or work table, not somewhere it'll easily get knocked over by a family member (with two legs or four legs). Or you can usually mount these to the wall too with sturdy screws on the back. Just make sure you secure it to the wall correctly and well and also level (and preferably not somewhere you or your family will bump into it a lot and thus jar the drawers out).
